Behind the Headlines

Fact-checked context for stories you're hearing about.

Privacy & Disclosure

This page explains what data Behind the Headlines collects, why we collect it, and how we use it.

What we collect

When you visit the site, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) records standard server logs: IP address, browser type, the page you requested, and the time of the request. This data is used only to operate and secure the site.

If you sign up for our newsletter, we collect your email address and store it with our newsletter provider. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email; this immediately removes your address from our list.

We do not sell, rent, or share email addresses with third parties.

Cookies and analytics

We may use privacy-respecting analytics tools to understand how readers find and use the site (which pages are read most, where readers come from). Where required, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not require cookies and does not track you across other sites.

Advertising and affiliate disclosure

Behind the Headlines participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and similar affiliate programs. When you click an affiliate link and make a qualifying purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These commissions help fund our reporting.

Affiliate links never determine what we cover or how we cover it. Our editorial team selects products based on relevance to the story, not commission rates.

We may also display ads served by third-party networks. These networks may use cookies. To learn how these third parties use data and your choices, see the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

Children

This site is intended for adult readers. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
